The city of Franklin will lose 301 jobs within the next year as a result of Best Buy Co. Inc.’s decision to close its warehouse in the city south of Indianapolis.

The Minneapolis-based appliance and electronics retailer notified the Indiana Department of Workforce Development in an e-mail posted on the agency’s website on Wednesday.

Best Buy will close the plant by the end of March 2012 and will terminate employees in phases, beginning with 34 on July 16, it said. Employees may apply for other jobs within the company, Best Buy said.

Operations at the plant, located near U.S. 31 on the north side of Franklin, will be integrated into other parts of the company, Best Buy said.

The warehouse had employed almost 1,000 people seven years ago. In 2004, the company laid off 415 employees—nearly half the workforce at the facility.

Best Buy operates 1,099 stores in the United States.
