Founded in 2007, Green BEAN already delivers produce and groceries to more than 12,000 members in 10 areas in Indiana, Ohio and Kentucky.
Co-founders Matt Ewer and Elizabeth Blessing launched the company to make healthy and fresh food options convenient, affordable and accessible. Green BEAN works with more than 100 farmers in the Midwest and grows some produce itself on farms in Indiana and Ohio.
The public’s growing interest in the local food movement has helped the company expand over the past few years, Ewer said. When Green BEAN started, it was among the first of its type in the Midwest.
Green BEAN will add to its staff to accommodate the new markets, but Ewer is not sure exactly how many people will be hired. The company has about 165 employees.
Annual revenue is $10 million, but Ewer estimates Green BEAN will bring in $12.5 million in 2013.
“We will continue to grow our business just like we grow our food,” Ewer said. “We want to make sure we take it nice and slow and responsible to make sure we are successful.”
Green BEAN—for Biodynamic, Education, Agriculture, Nutrition—delivers a customizable variety of fruits and vegetables, along with natural groceries, to members’ doorsteps weekly or biweekly. The minimum order is $35.
