Thomas Jefferson could hardly be further from today’s liberal/progressive agenda [Hetrick, June 11]. Jefferson said, “The democracy will cease to exist when you take away from those who are willing to work and give to those who would not.”

For an education quote from Jefferson, how about, “It is better to tolerate that rare instance of a parent’s refusing to let his child be educated, than to shock the common feelings by a forcible transportation and education of the infant against the will of his father.”

Hetrick (quoting journalist Chris Mooney) also said, “…political conservatives have placed themselves in direct conflict with modern scientific knowledge, which shows beyond serious question that global warming is real and caused by humans.”

When the Vikings discovered Greenland, it was suitable for farming. Eastern Canada was called Vinland because grapes grew so well there. It’s too cold there now. It’s quite likely that natural cycles of the sun are considerably more important than human-created greenhouse gases.

To quote Jefferson one more time, “What is it that men cannot be made to believe?”
