The agency had asked for proposals for land adjacent to the 21-story John J. Barton Apartments at 555 Massachusetts Ave. and the 15-story Lugar Tower at 901 Fort Wayne Ave.
A who’s who of local companies including Flaherty & Collins Properties, Mansur Real Estate Services Inc., Barrett & Stokely Inc. and Shiel Sexton Co. Inc. were working on bids in anticipation of a Feb. 28 deadline. The agency said five groups submitted bids, but it would not share details, citing U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development guidelines.
The bids will be reviewed at the staff level, and eventually the executive director will make a recommendation to the board, said Bruce Baird, the agency’s director of strategic planning and development. Once the proposals reach the board, the options would be made public.
Agency properties available include a triangle-shaped parcel, now a park, in front of the Barton, and small pieces on either side of Lugar Tower.
The Barton property at Massachusetts Avenue and Michigan Street is sandwiched between the Murat Theatre, the Athenaeum and an Indianapolis Fire Department station. The other parcels are on either side of the 221-unit Lugar Tower, fronting Fort Wayne Avenue and East Street.
