Heikens is on his second tour of duty at Indianapolis Business Journal. During his first stint from 1991 to 1998, he launched IBJ’s small-business section as well as a fax that evolved into the IBJ Daily e-newsletter. Heikens returned to IBJ in 2006 as its first online editor and now edits its Focus and Forefront sections. In the interim, he was a business reporter at The Indianapolis Star, where he covered manufacturing and the economy, and was lead reporter for the award-winning series “State of Decline.” A native of Iowa, he graduated from Southern Illinois University with a major in journalism, was a business reporter in Illinois and taught English in Japan. He lives near Franklin with his wife, son and two dogs, and tries to avoid thinking about how much time he spends working on his house.
