A 41,000-square-foot LA Fitness could replace two vacant commercial buildings including the former home of Cinema Grill at the southeast corner of 86th Street and Ditch Road. The plans by Fitness International LLC call for demolition of the two existing buildings on more than 10 acres between a CVS and a 1960s apartment community. The plans would require a minor zoning variance addressing a "maneuvering area" between the proposed new building and the apartments. The city's planning staff is recommending approval of the plans, which are scheduled for a public hearing today in front of the Board of Zoning Appeals. The developer has agreed to install wall-mounted lights that will face downward on the east side of the building. Cinema Grill closed in May 2012 after a 13-year run.
