As a local business owner and someone who grew up just off of Dean Road, where the first U.S. Open Clay Courts were played, I am very saddened that the Indy Tennis Championships is leaving our city. Tennis was a big part of my life growing up here. I have been involved as a volunteer for the tournament from the beginning—as a ball girl when I was very young to becoming a vendor and supporter of the tournament as an adult and local business.

My family had the pleasure of housing a couple of the lady players back when it was the U.S. Open Clay Courts and played at the Indianapolis Racquet Club. What a great experience for us! I still remember Jimmy Connors getting upset with me for bringing him water in a paper cup instead of a tennis ball can. Yes, Connors preferred to drink out of the old aluminum tennis ball cans.

I understand firsthand the economic climate and the reasons the tournament has struggled. I felt compelled to write a quick letter thanking those that supported the tournament for all these years and those that work endless hours behind the scenes to make it all possible, some of whom I have had the pleasure of knowing personally. It all brings back many fond memories from childhood as well as throughout my adult life here in Indianapolis and I thank you for this.
