A Jesuit high school that the Indianapolis Archdiocese no longer recognizes as Catholic because it refused to fire a teacher in a same-sex marriage said it is appealing that decision to the Vatican.

Rev. Bill Verbryke, president of Brebeuf Preparatory School,  sent a letter to the school community Sunday saying the head of the Jesuits’ Midwest Province has asked the Congregation for Catholic Education in Rome to overrule a decree issued by Archbishop Charles Thompson in June saying the school “will no longer be identified or recognized” as Catholic.

Verbryke also says Thompson will allow himself and another Brebeuf priest to celebrate daily Mass in the school chapel before classes start but won’t permit other Masses during the upcoming school year.

Archdiocesan spokesman Greg Otolski confirmed the decision on Brebeuf’s Masses.

  1. So, since the last update in June, the Archbishop declined to reverse his own decision as step 1 of the appeal (no surprise there). And he’s gone back on a promise to not penalize the school by allowing the Jesuit priests by banning the offering of the Sacraments.

Prior, he said the Diocesan priests would no longer come to the school to say Mass a few times a year as before, but Brebeuf’s own Jesuit priests could conduct their daily morning mass AND offer the Eucharist. Now that second part if being retracted. Vindictive and breaking of a promise.

  2. The guy is a loser. He’s just looking for press and self promotion. If CNN and the MSM can’t get him promoted from the forced discrimination in the Cathedral case, maybe the Vatican will promote him or defrock him for misleading and co-employing the Jesuits.

Either way, we just need the guy out of Indy. Let him do his damage in Rome or with Carrick in Philly. They have way bigger sexuality conflicts in both of those places with much higher ranking clergy.

  3. What a waste of time…and by the way, IBJ monitors, why is IndyGuy 1 allowed to use a screen comment name that is not part of his real name? I thought the new Comments (i.e., non-Disqus) rules required that your real name and the first letter of your surname be required to post comments. Why is he (or she) allowed to hide?
