Hoosier Park, the pari-mutuel horse race track in Anderson, has announced a 10-percent purse increase for its standardbred racing program. The increase took effect April 23.

The purse increase, Hoosier Park officials said, is the result of positive business factors as well as conservative purseaccount management at the beginning of this year’s early-season meet. The standardbred season will continue through June 25.

“Thanks in large part to full fields and competitive racing, we have had an increase in our simulcast signal handle during the first two weeks of the season,” said Rick Moore, Hoosier Park president and general manager. “That, coupled with our conservative approach to the purse account at the beginning of the meet, allowed us to increase purses.”

The announcement comes as a surprise to the horse racing industry. Hoosier Park officials have been saying for the last two years that their business is hurting as a
result of the opening of another parimutuel track in Shelby County.

Hoosier Park, owned by Louisvillebased Churchill Downs Inc., also operates off-track betting facilities in Indianapolis, Fort Wayne and Merrillville.
