Carmel-based Delta Faucet Co. announced Wednesday morning that a consolidation of machining activities will result in the loss of 40 jobs at its Greensburg plant.

The cuts will reduce Delta’s work force in Greensburg to about 160, the company said. Greensburg is about 50 miles southeast of Indianapolis, in Decatur County.

Meanwhile, the consolidation will add 20 workers to its location in Jackson, Tenn., bringing total employment there to roughly 710.

The transition in operations will occur over the next three months, after which time the Greensburg plant will operate as a “finishing-focused” facility, Delta said.
The consolidation is driven by declining retail activity, as well as the continuing downturn in the housing market and overall economy, the company said.

“Addressing difficult market conditions is always challenging, especially when people’s lives are affected,” Delta spokeswoman Paula Warner said. “This move, while unfortunate, is necessary to bring staffing in line with demand and will help the company remain competitive.”

The job losses in Greensburg are the latest in a string at the Delta plant. The company laid off more than 200 workers in three rounds of cuts in the first six months of 2008.

Delta is owned by Michigan-based Masco Corp.
