In 2007, Nathan Feltman became Indiana's secretary of commerce, replacing his mentor, IBJ Media Corp. co-owner Michael
Maurer.
It was a smooth transition. Feltman kept up the Indiana Economic Development Corp.'s pace of business attraction and
relocations, landing major deals such as Medco Health Solutions Inc., Arcadia Resources and Oxford BioSignals.
Born in Virginia, Feltman grew up in Mishawaka, then studied business and political science at Indiana University. After
traveling to the Soviet Union in 1990 as part of a summer exchange program, he devoted his career to international business.
Feltman earned an IU law degree, then returned to Moscow, living there from 1995 to 1998, helping multinational businesses
navigate the post-communist market economy.
After he returned to the United States, Feltman spent five years in Chicago practicing law before returning to Indiana in
2003 to join Ice Miller LLP. He joined IEDC in 2005 as executive vice president.
Feltman, 37, has followed in Maurer's footsteps, emphasizing rapid response to inquiries, aggressive development of leads
and relationship-building at every turn.
But he hasn't been afraid to crack the whip. For example, Feltman is consolidating the resources of Indiana's high-technology
park program, with an aim toward tying park certification to actual job growth.
In October, IEDC renewed the certification of Anderson's successful Flagship Enterprise Center but put Shelbyville's
struggling Intelliplex on a short leash. Its status as a certified high-tech park is probationary for the next two years.
Renewal depends on Intelliplex's addition of 50 high-tech jobs.
