State officials expect more backyard fireworks shows this year because budget problems have forced many municipalities to
cancel large professional fireworks displays.
The Indiana State Fire Marshal's office says it's issued nearly 200 fewer fireworks permits this year compared to
last year. With more fireworks in the hands of private citizens, public safety officials are reminding people to follow safety
precautions and be careful this Fourth of July.
If more money is spent on fireworks this year, it could help two state funds—one that helps Indiana residents affected
by disasters and another that helps train Indiana firefighters. Indiana adds a 5 percent public safety fee to the sale of
fireworks, with the money going to those funds.
