IUPUI spokesman Ed Holdaway said Tuesday that it was a mutual decision between Gardner and the university.
Gardner, 38, was lodged in the Hamilton County Jail over the weekend and released early Tuesday on his own recognizance. He arrested early Sunday by the Fishers Police Department after being found asleep behind the wheel at an intersection at about 4:30 a.m.
IUPUI has named associate coach Byron Rimm II to serve as interim head coach for the 2019-20 season. Rimm II was head coach at Prairie View A&M from 2006-15, leading the school to a 115–192 record. He resigned during the 2015-16 season after the team started 1-18.
Gardner was entering his sixth season as IUPUI’s head coach and has a 64-93 career record. He won Indiana’s Mr. Basketball Award in 1999 for his play at Indianapolis North Central High School, where he won a state championship. After playing collegiately at the University of Arizona, Gardner played professionally overseas for more than eight years, primarily in Germany.
He spent a year as an assistant coach at the University of Memphis and two years at Loyola of Chicago before succeeding Ron Hunter as head coach at IUPUI in 2011.
IUPUI has not had a winning record since Hunter’s final season, when it went 19-14.
