Indiana has joined other states in adopting a set of education benchmarks that establish what students nationwide should
know by the time they graduate high school.
The Common Core State Standards are intended to replace education goals that vary wildly from state to state with a uniform
set of expectations. The standards have already been adopted by many states, with a majority expected to sign up soon.
Indiana's Department of Education adopted the standards for English, literacy and math after they were approved Tuesday
by the State Board of Education and Indiana's Education Roundtable.
State superintendent Tony Bennett says the standards to be implemented by the 2014-2015 school year will hold students to
higher and clearer standards than ever before.
