The Indianapolis-based insurer said Lewis will remain with the company until the end of the year to "assist in the transition of her duties." A spokeswoman declined to elaborate on the move.
Lewis was dismissed Oct. 19 from her job as president and CEO of WellPoint's Comprehensive Health Solutions Business Unit, which includes provider relations, and care and disease management, since October 2007.
Before that, she served as president of local group business and was responsible for $31 billion in annual revenue and about 47 percent of WellPoint's total membership, according to the insurer.
WellPoint runs Blue Cross Blue Shield plans in 14 states and is the largest commercial health insurer based on membership.
Last year, Lewis earned a $650,000 salary as one of the insurer's highest paid executives and received a $200,000 bonus in part for helping to lead the sale of WellPoint's NextRx subsidiary to Express Scripts Inc. for about $4.68 billion.
WellPoint's chief medical officer, Dr. Sam Nussbaum, was named interim president of Comprehensive Health Solutions while the company searches for the new president, Chairwoman and CEO Angela Braly said in an e-mail to employees.
WellPoint reports third-quarter earnings Nov. 3.
