Atlanta-based Americold is expected to break ground this month on a $30 million, 100,0000-square-foot expansion at its Indianapolis cold-storage warehouse on South Arlington Avenue.

The expansion in the existing 400,000-square-foot facility should be completed in November 2011 and will house what’s known as an automated storage-retrieval system, company spokesman Neil Campbell said.

The system automatically retrieves pallets from trucks and racks, making operations more efficient.

“This is unusual, in that it will be so advanced, with state-of-the-art technologies,” Campbell said. “Indianapolis is a key market for us, and it’s an area where we want to invest in.”

Americold has had a presence in Indianapolis since 1987 and employs 217 at the facility. The expansion isn't expected to expand employment at the facility.

Americold’s customers include large food manufacturers as well as retailers and restaurants. It has about 100 warehouses nationwide.
