U.S. Attorney Joe Hogsett says the office collected more than $10 million in fiscal 2010, and spent about $7.7 million.
Hogsett says much of the money that's collected goes to help victims. Criminal fines and assessments go to a victims fund that is available to crime victims and the organizations and institutions that assist them, while criminal restitution is paid directly to the victims.
Nationwide, the country's 94 U.S. attorney's offices collected a total of $6.8 billion last year.
