The Indiana Department of Workforce Development said Friday that the rate was 3.3%, down from 3.4% in July. The last time Indiana’s unemployment rate was at 3.3% was February 2018.
The state’s unemployment rate for August also was below the national rate of 3.7% for the month.
Indiana’s labor force—which is composed of both employed and unemployed-but-willing-to-work residents—decreased by 2,135 workers from July to August, to 3.38 million.
Indiana’s labor-force participation rate—the percentage of the state’s population that is either employed or actively seeking work—remained at 64.6%, ahead of the national rate of 63.2%.
Private sector employment in Indiana slipped by 2,100 in August over the previous month but is up more than 23,000 over the year, the state said. Total private employment is 2,739,000, the state said.
Job losses in August were seen in the sectors of Leisure and Hospitality (-1,600) and Manufacturing (-1,500). Gains occurred in Professional and Business Services (900) and Financial Activities (600).
The unemployment rate in Indiana for August was lower than the rates in neighboring states Michigan (4.2%), Illinois (4%), Ohio (4.1%) and Kentucky (4.4%).
