The New York Times reports that Apollo's hiring of the 55-year-old Democrat fills a hole at the firm, which has lagged its competitors in establishing a base in Washington.
Bayh left the Senate earlier this month after opting last year not to seek a third term. Prior to that, he served two terms as Indiana governor.
Bayh announced in December that he would not run for Indiana governor in 2012 because he wanted to put his duties as a father of 15-year-old twin sons ahead of his political ambitions.
In joining Apollo, Bayh becomes the latest former high-ranking political official to join private equity firms in recent years.
