Subscribe NowThe new owner of WISH-TV Channel 8 announced Monday that the station plans to hire its first reporter dedicated exclusively to covering local multicultural issues as part of a larger plan by the station to expand news coverage.
DuJuan McCoy, owner, president, and CEO of Circle City Broadcasting, in April announced his firm’s plan to buy WISH-TV from Nexstar Media Group for $42.5 million. That deal has since closed.
WISH said it has begun a national search to hire a multicultural reporter who will focus on “news and issues of concern to women, millennials, Hispanics and Latinos, African Americans, Asian Americans, Middle Eastern Americans, Native Americans, and the LGBTQ community.”
“Our new reporter will share previously untold stories of the many distinct cultures and ethnic groups who make up our ever-growing, diverse community,” WISH-TV General Manager Randy Ingram said in a written remarks. “This dedicated focus to multicultural reporting will give a voice to the communities, traditions, and issues currently not being covered by other Indiana television stations,”
WISH said the hiring will be part of “an unprecedented news coverage expansion initiative being rolled out over the next several months,” but declined to provide more information about the plans.
McCoy told IBJ last week he has big plans to expand the station’s news coverage but was not yet ready to divulge the details.

Love this! Great way to build a sense of community.
Wouldn’t it be ironic if their “national search” turned up an older, white, straight male reporter who turned out to be the most qualified for this new position? Who wants to bet that the eventual “winner” is going to be a younger gay woman, probably multi-racial, with a hyphenated last name, single, at least one adopted child, with a first name that none of us have ever known someone with that same name. I am also going to go out on a limb and guess that she will have very limited, if any, experience in the field. With any luck, she will also be a meteorologist; we are down to less than three dozen..
In short. The more boxes this candidate can check, the more qualified channel 8
will find them. Qualifications will be secondary.
Way to continue to divide and segment as many people based on as many possible non-relevant human characteristics as possible. I love all our nationalities, traditions, ethnic festivals, but to assign a person full time to cover this ( and I believe to try and divide us) seem counterproductive. I wish WISH all the luck.
As you, I have no problem with diversity.
Perpetually focusing on differences will only create resentment and anger.
