Former U.S. Rep. Brad Ellsworth will join utility holding company Vectren Corp. as president of Vectren Energy Delivery of Indiana-North.

Evansville-based Vectren says Ellsworth will join the company May 1 and will work out of Indianapolis. It says his position "is designed to enhance the company's presence with local government officials, community leaders and customers in 49 Indiana counties served by Vectren North.

Ellsworth, an Evansville Democrat, was sheriff of Vanderburgh County for eight years before serving two terms as 8th District congressman. He left public office in January after losing a bid for the Senate to Republican Dan Coats.

Vectren North serves 570,000 gas customers across Indiana.
