An Indianapolis area Democrat who at one point had considered making a run for governor will not seek re-election to her Statehouse office.

Indiana Rep. Karlee Macer, of Speedway, announced Tuesday that she won’t run for re-election for House District 92 this year.

“After much deliberation, reflection, and family input, I’ve decided it’s time to pass the torch to the next generation of leaders in our community to pick up these causes and champion them for our state,” Macer said in a written statement. “While I will not be seeking re-election in 2020, my passion for service and heart for Hoosiers means that I won’t be far, and will continue to work hard for our communities around the state.”

Macer, 48, has been a state lawmaker since 2013 and works as the community relations manager and clinical liaison at Northwest Healthcare Center. She’s known at the Statehouse for being an advocate for veteran affairs.

“When I first ran for office, our community was crying out for better infrastructure, economic development and a better quality of life for all Hoosiers,” Macer said. “Together, we’ve worked hard to improve our neighborhoods and accomplish our shared goals to fight for families, veterans and workers alike, and though this work never ends, I’m proud of the steps forward we have taken.”

During the summer, Macer said she was “seriously” considering running for governor in 2020, but she decided against that idea in August.

Macer is not expected to run for another office.

“I look forward to continuing to be an advocate for our communities as a private citizen, and I will continue to fight side by side with those working to forge the best path forward for Indiana,” she said.
