The old and worn-down railroad overpasses dotting Indianapolis’ downtown will soon get a makeover.

The city released bids soliciting contractors to repaint, clean and add lighting underneath the overpasses at Meridian, Pennsylvania and Illinois streets and College and Capitol avenues downtown, and on 10th Street east of the Monon Trail.

Between $1 million and $2.5 million of the initial Rebuild Indy money from the sale of the city’s water and sewer utilities will fund the downtown overpasses. Another $100,000 to $200,000 from the same funding source will go toward the 10th Street project.

“It’s part of the general scope of Rebuild Indy—to fix things that are deteriorating,” said Bryan Moll, a project manager for the city’s Department of Public Works. “These bridges are not aesthetically pleasing and they’re also not safe.”

Construction on the 10th Street overpass is expected to begin Aug. 1, and work on the other downtown overpasses will start mid-August.

Moll said the goal is to wrap up the projects by November.
