lawyers in its directory. The Web address is www.avvo.com.
Avvo rates and publishes information about lawyers, including case history, client ratings, peer reviews and disciplinary
sanctions. It was founded in 2006 by former Expedia.comgeneral counsel Mark Britton.
The Web site rates lawyers using a number system from 1 to 10. The rating is calculated using a mathematical model that considers
a lawyer’s years in practice, disciplinary history, professional achievement and industry recognition.
Attorney profiles are available in 30 states and the District of Columbia —
or roughly 85 percent of the total number of attorneys
licensed in the United States. Avvo provides lawyers with a free online profile they can update with as much information as
they wish.
The site allows former and current clients to weigh in on a lawyer’s performance by posting their own opinions in client reviews.
Consumers also can ask an attorney —
anonymously if desired —
a question and receive feedback.
