The Fort Worth, Texas- based company said Tuesday that it was unable to find a buyer for its business after filing for bankruptcy protection earlier this year.
It will start going-out-of-business sales as soon as it can reopen stores that have been temporarily shut due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Bankruptcy papers filed in February indicated Pier 1 would keep its five Indianapolis-area stores in business, if possible. The retailer has two stores in Indianapolis (6810 S. Emerson Ave. and 2902 W. 86th St.) and three in the suburbs (Plainfield, Carmel and Noblesville).
But those bankruptcy papers indicated seven stores would be eliminated in Indiana: in Bloomington, Kokomo, Fort Wayne, Merrillville, Valparaiso, Goshen and Warsaw.
Pier 1 traces its history to a single store in 1962 that sold beanbag chairs and love beads to hippies in San Mateo, California. It expanded to offer just about anything for the home, from lounge chairs to curtains, and it later adopted the logo: “From Hippie to Hip.” At its height, Pier 1 had more than 1,200 stores.
But, in recent years, its sales have fallen as it struggled to compete with online retailers Wayfair and Amazon, which sell sofas and coffee tables at a lower price and deliver them quickly.
Other chains that have failed to connect with customers have filed for bankruptcy protection recently, including J.C. Penney and J.Crew.

Another one bites the dust!
Sad but have to think this is just the start..The shut down has not helped anyone and further supports the complete reopening issue and the continuation of protecting the vulnerable…World is not sterile now and never will be ! In retrospect No real reason for the shutdown i…Now Power hungry Politicians are continuing the shut down with no real science support…Note…Models keep changing and yet the power hungry bureaucrats and politicians continue as if the curve never flattened and they will need no life or businesses to support their ridiculous incomes and benefits…
The day is coming….

Amazon will raise their prices..
They were becoming irrelevant before the pandemic. Businesses have to change their game with the times. Pretty much the same since 1962.
