I appreciated Kathleen McLaughlin’s [July 25] article on professional athletes’ involvement in philanthropic work, often creating their own charities. A trend in not-for-profits is organizations designed to “burn brightly” for a limited life and then close. The pitch to funders and donors is that energy is focused on making an impact, not creating an organization to last years into the future. Conversely, if an athlete desires their organization to live beyond their professional fame, they will need to share leadership and build the systems and infrastructure to consistently raise funds and prove program effectiveness.
