An AmeriCorps leadership program influenced by Michelle Obama’s work in Chicago is headed for Indianapolis.

The program, called Public Allies, would allow not-for-profit organizations to hire local young people, ages 18 to 30, for
full-time apprenticeships. The "allies" spend 10 months working in areas such as education, economic development
or health.
They also undergo intensive leadership training with an eye toward careers.

The Indianapolis Neighborhood Resource Center would administer Public Allies in Indianapolis. Executive Director Anne-Marie
Taylor said she’s waiting on final approval of a federal grant worth more than $370,000, but officials in Washington, D.C.,
are already helping recruit participants.

If the Indianapolis grant is approved, INRC would be able to hire about 30 people, who would work at 15 to 25 organizations.
To host an ally, a local not-for-profit must kick in $11,000 toward his or her $15,000 stipend.

The program is to begin in October and lasts 10 months.
