As a subscriber you can listen to articles at work, in the car, or while you work out. Subscribe NowState officials say unemployed Indiana residents can file for an additional six weeks of jobless benefits beginning Oct. 16.
The Indiana Department of Workforce Development said Thursday the six-week extension — the fourth by the federal government — is available only in states with a three-month average unemployment rate of 8.5 percent of higher.
When Indiana's three-month average fell below 8.5 percent in May, Indiana no longer was eligible for that extension and some people moved into a class known as extended benefits, covering their final 20 weeks of benefits.
The agency says more than 6,000 Indiana residents were receiving the fourth extension when Indiana lost eligibility. It says they'll move automatically back to the fourth extension and off of extended benefits.
Indiana's unemployment rate was 8.7 percent in August, the state's Department of Workforce Development said last month, bringing the three-month average to 8.5 percent. Updated figures are expected to be released Oct. 21.
