Indiana drawing more people, businesses across state lines

Indiana saw more people move to the state than leave between 2005 and 2009 despite a decreased mobility nationwide attributed to the recession.

The Journal Gazette of Fort Wayne reported most of the people coming to Indiana weren't moving from neighboring states despite campaigns aimed at drawing people and businesses to the Hoosier state.

The data don't reflect foreign migration.

Indiana has been trying to draw businesses from other states with ad campaigns playing off concerns about higher taxes in Michigan and Illinois. Indiana Economic Development Corp. spokeswoman Katelyn Hancock says 16 Illinois companies plan to move all or a portion of their operations to Indiana as a result.
