Paluka lost his mother, Gail, in 2001 after her eight-year battle with breast cancer. He went on to play collegiate summer baseball, and now plans to form a team that will serve to raise money for research and for individuals struggling with cancer.
The Cure Baseball will be a summer collegiate team, and Paluka hopes to schedule games for it in 2013.
The team will spend next summer traveling to cities where other teams’ games are already scheduled to host one-day camps for kids.
“Then at the games at night, we’ll give a donation to a member of each community … who has been affected by cancer in a profound manner,” Paluka said.
Paluka, who has already begun raising money, said he hopes to direct larger donations to cancer research centers.•
