Indianapolis-based Buchanan Group Services LLC, parent of Flanner and Buchanan Funeral Centers, said Thursday that it plans a $2.3 million expansion in the southern Indiana city of Scottsburg, creating up to 24 jobs by 2015.

Buchanan Group said it will begin construction this spring on a 17,500-square-foot building in Scottsburg for granite memorial production.

The company, which has 300 full-time employees in Indiana, plans to hire workers in production, delivery and installation.

The expansion follows Buchanan Group’s October purchase of Scottsburg-based Fewell Enterprises Inc., one of the state’s largest granite memorial manufacturing and finishing companies, for $3.5 million.

Buchanan Group principal Bruce W. Buchanan said Fewell pioneered monument laser technology years ago and its library of designs is the envy of the industry.

“We will capitalize on this fact while creating jobs and constructing a better building in Scottsburg,” he said. “As personalized funerals have become the norm, we see tremendous potential to grow our Indiana-based business nationally."

Buchanan Group was founded more than 130 years ago and is in its fourth generation of family ownership

The Indiana Economic Development Corp. offered Buchanan Group up to $100,000 in tax credits and up to $32,000 in training grants based on the company's job-creation plans. Scottsburg will consider additional property tax abatement.
