COVID-19 cases in Indiana again top 6,000

The Indiana State Department of Health on Thursday reported 6,458 new COVID-19 cases, the 21st time daily cases have exceeded 6,000.

New cases have topped 4,000 in 43 straight daily reports.

The state reported 79 more deaths due to COVID-19, the eighth time deaths have exceeded 70 in the past 10 reports.

Statewide hospitalizations due to COVID-19 dipped from 3,192 on Tuesday to 3,147 on Wednesday. The high was 3,460 set on Nov. 30.

COVID-19 patients occupy 31.9% of the state’s intensive care beds and non-COVID patients are taking up 47.9%, leaving 20.2% available.

The department said it tested 16,962 new individuals, the 51st straight day that testing in that category has exceeded 10,000.

The 7-day positivity rate for unique individuals remained at 24.5%.

*New cases, deaths and tests are previously unreported cases, deaths and tests submitted to the Indiana State Health Department in the 24 hours through 11:59 p.m. the previous day.   1. Big drop in Covid-19 patients using ICU beds (mid 40s for weeks, and now down to 31.9%). Overall hospitalizations down as well since the beginning of December. Feels like some pretty good news….
