As a subscriber you can listen to articles at work, in the car, or while you work out. Subscribe NowIBJ’s article headlined “Downtown office market set to shift as firms rethink space” [Feb. 19] noted upcoming changes anticipated by downtown office occupants.
One obvious use not mentioned would be the conversion of these spaces from office to residential rental apartments or condominium uses.
Real estate’s “highest and best use” question would be answered with such a consideration. With downtown residential space supply very limited currently, and with commercial office space experiencing higher than normal vacancy rates (due to both COVID-19 and technological advances), consideration should be given to reusing this space for residential—thus bringing people back downtown on a 24-hour basis.
