The acquisition of Philadelphia-based Xlibris, announced today, reflects further consolidation in the growing industry. In September 2007, Author Solutions bought Nebraska rival iUniverse.
Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Xlibris employs 500 people in Philadelphia, New Jersey and the Philippines, said Author Solutions Vice President Terry Dwyer. The Indiana firm has 400 employees.
Dwyer said the acquisitions makes sense as Author Solutions strives to provide a full portfolio of self-publishing resources. Xlibris offers a robust array of marketing services to authors, complementing its new owner’s editorial and publishing expertise.
“It has great additive properties,” he said.
Together, Author Solutions and Xlibris published more than 19,000 titles last year, he said, and company leaders expect that to increase in 2009.
“We expect this to be a strong year,” Dwyer said.
Author Solutions, which operates as AuthorHouse, was founded in 1997. It is owned by Palo Alto, Calif.-based Bertram Capital.
Dwyer doesn’t expect any staff cuts as a result of the merger.
