I am happy to say I never accepted anything from Mayor Brainard or his campaign representatives. I was once offered a job for a family member when I was on the City Council right before a vote on a major ordinance. I not only didn’t accepted it, I voted against the ordinance which was defeated. As a financial professional, I could not support almost all of Mayor Brainard ‘s financial ordinances because they were not sound. Unexpected windfalls and pushing debt payments forward have saved the demise of Carmel several times, however in the long term a Special Benefits Tax will be needed to make payments on Carmel’s $2B in debt.
Kurt, did you ask anyone when the investigation of the hotel was going to be completed? In semi-related news, many of the bricks and pavers at the Palladium and around City Center are in rough shape. The tunnel near these under the Monon is also being closed for repairs. What is the life-cycle for “the big vision for the city of Carmel” projects? Who is on the hook for fixing them? The taxpayers are borrowing to fix the Sophia Square garage. The paid hacks and shills for this vision talk about how it will all pay off in 20-years, and then everything will be golden. One, that is a long-time, a quarter of a lifetime. Two, Merchant Square’s TIF doesn’t seem to be spouting golden coins, much less many of the strip centers in Carmel with the ubiquitous “For Lease” signs. These people, except Nelson, claim to be conservatives. Maybe they should listen to William F. Buckley and stand athwart history and yell Stop. But then again, he also had a great quote about being governed by random names in the phone book.
The Carmel Council looks a lot like the Steak&Shake Board. Just rubber stamping whatever the Supreme Leader says.
Kurt should have done his home work more carefully. Unless of course, he’s doing as he was asked to do. Assen was the beneficiary of numerous Brainard avenues of money, to the tune of some 50,000$, 90% of which came from Brainard led fund raisers or businesses in his pocket. Why Kurt are you showing him as receiving nothing? It’s no better if he got his money from Brainard’s official campaign or from his ring kissers. Few people in our district to which he carpetbagged just in time to set up a campaign (did you look that up?) even knew who this waiter was until Brainard and the incumbent councilors pulled him up on their stage with them and put him on their flyers. Why is this piece not behind the IBJ paywall? A favor for a politician? The council less aligned because of the citizens not the council. More grassroots citizens got involved than ever in 2019, and despite record money spent by Brainard we saw one of his incumbent puppets ousted and a record number of votes against his regime. If you want to write articles for the people (and if you all want more People to subscribe), speak to the People, not the politicians.
