At least 11 other workplace shootings reported in Indiana since mid-2015

Indiana has experienced at least 11 workplace shooting incidents since August 2015 in addition to Thursday night’s mass shooting at the FedEx facility near Indianapolis International Airport, according to the Gun Violence Archive, a not-for-profit in Washington, D.C., and IBJ research.

In addition to the nine deaths reported overnight at FedEx, at least four other Indiana fatalities and four injuries resulted from workplace shootings since mid-2015 in Indianapolis, Jeffersonville, Goshen, Carmel, Gary, Elkhart, Fishers and Seymour.

While Thursday’s shooting occurred at a FedEx site, it was not immediately known what, if any, relationship the shooter had with the company or employees there. Police said the shooter committed suicide at the scene.

Here’s a look at other Indiana workplace shootings cited by the Gun Violence Archive:

• On Aug. 1, 2015, a man fired from an Arby’s restaurant at 25 South Franklin Road in Indianapolis returned to its parking lot to shoot a former co-worker’s car. There were no deaths or injuries as a result of the incident.
• On March 10, 2016, Qing Chen, 37, shot and killed his manager, Ward Edwards, 49, at the Cummins Seymour Engine Plant at 800 E. Third St. in Seymour.
• On Oct. 21, 2016, a former employee who had recently been fired from BCS Recycling at 7955 Zionsville Rd. in Indianapolis, returned to shoot and injure an employee.
• On Dec. 1, 2016, a former employee was arrested after a shooting at Newgistics, at 9910 North by Northeast Blvd. in Fishers. There were no deaths or injuries as a result of the incident.
• On Jan. 15, 2018, a man fired from the Ruler Foods at 6110 Broadway Ave. in Elkhart for trying to sell drugs to customers returned, pistol-whipped another worker and stole a car.
• On April 18, 2018, Esteban Ocampo, 50, allegedly shot and killed his former business partner, Markis Square, 30, in a dispute over money at Ocampo Auto Sales, at 401 W. Ridge Rd., in Gary. He’s alleged to have made it look like a robbery before he was taken into custody and charged with murder.
• On July 27, 2018, an employee shot and injured a coworker at the Red Robin at 14599 Clay Terrace Blvd. in Carmel’s Clay Terrace shopping center.
• On Jan. 22, 2019, a recently fired employee of the Blue Diamond Communities at 1480 Sandpiper Ln. in Goshen allegedly returned to fire a gun at the nursing home. There were no deaths or injuries as a result of the incident.
• On July 10, 2019, Bobby Powell, 19, shot and killed his co-worker, James Winters Jr., at the Big O Tires at 2550 Allison Lane in Jeffersonville.
• On July 27, 2020, James Daniels, 40, allegedly shot and injured a co-worker at Coreslab Structures at 1030 S. Kitley Ave. in Indianapolis.

The Gun Violence Archives list doesn’t appear to be exhaustive, however. For example, Fox59 reported a workplace shooting that resulted in a death in January of this year at PSC Industries, an insulation factory on the east side.
