Subscribe NowCOVID-19 case numbers surged in Indiana for the fourth day in a row on Friday, resulting in the highest number of statewide hospitalizations in nearly six months, according the Indiana State Department of Health.
The department reported 2,058 new cases of COVID, up from 1,899 on Thursday. It’s the largest number of new cases in the daily report since Feb. 6, when 2,855 were reported. Marion County reported 291 new cases, the highest daily number since January.
The state reported nine new deaths from COVID-19, lifting the cumulative death total to 13,624. The seven-day moving average of new deaths increased from five to six, the department said.
Statewide hospitalizations due to COVID-19 rose from 977 on Wednesday to 1,017 on Thursday, the highest number since Feb. 15, when 1,018 people were hospitalized with the coronavirus. The all-time high was 3,460, set on Nov. 30.
The department reported the testing of 6,256 new individuals.
The state said more than 2.97 million Hoosiers had been fully vaccinated against COVID-19 as of Friday at 5 a.m. More than 2.97 million had received the first dose of a two-dose vaccination.
Indiana on Thursday issued the latest update on so-called breakthrough cases, in which fully vaccinated people get COVID-19. As of July 29, Indiana had recorded 5,323 breakthrough COVID cases, 185 breakthrough hospitalizations and 69 breakthrough deaths. The death number equates to 0.002% of those who are fully vaccinated. The state said the average age of a person experiencing a breakthrough death was 79.
