Built in 1903, The Claypool was at one time the principal destination for political and business conventions, meetings and other events downtown. Ads and marketing pieces for the hotel described it as “fire proof,” but that turned out not to be true. A fire broke out at the hotel in 1967 and the damage was significant enough that the building had to be demolished in 1969.
