The City needs to run a shuttle between the transit center and the justice center. It would benefit everybody.
Move both the Prosecutor’s Office and Public Defender Agency back to the City County Building. Provide a bus back and forth to the new Court Complex. Keeping the attorneys and support/admin staff of both government offices in Downtown is cost effective; and those staying Downtown will also provide on going business to the City Market and neighboring establishmemts. Or move everyone to Twin Aire and further decimate the City Market while paying much more in rent for the brand new offices.
The government stupidity in every aspect of this story makes my head hurt.
Hats off to the three people that researched and wrote this article! What a contrived mess this overall project has become. It seems we were all lead to believe this was a tax payer funded project several years ago, or maybe mislead, or maybe just my bad memory? In any case, the idea that all city and county offices end up paying market rate rents is somewhat of a surprise. At least we are getting a new and single location jail. Hopefully the repeat criminals don’t get automatically bonded out before they get to spend some real time in there!
Exactly. On the surface, utilizing unused land and maybe a small economic spark to a struggling area. Instead, we get the normal government stupidity and a huge bill. Would love to know which politicians got bribed for this, and how much.
How can the complex be the “Marian County Community Justice Complex” but then we have individual departments with their own say on if they move to it?
Hypothetically we could have dozens of departments in dozens of separate locations, with the poor taxpayers saving zip.
Shouldn’t hundreds of taxpayer-paid attorneys and support staff be close to where the defendants and the courts are? If the answer is “yes” than that means everyone relocates to the Justice Center campus. End of discussion.
The Prosecutor’s Office is an independent agency with its own separately elected leader. If you live in Marion County, you get to vote for the Prosecutor, and the Prosecutor gets to decide how to run their office.
The City-County Council must approve the Prosecutor’s budget, so it will have something to say about this.
