The Indiana State Department of Health on Thursday reported another increase in COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations, along with 50 more deaths from the virus.

The health department reported 5,240 new cases of COVID-19, the highest number of cases in the daily report since Jan. 9, when 6,045 new cases were reported.

Statewide hospitalizations due to COVID-19 jumped from 2,513 Tuesday to 2,602 on Wednesday, the largest number since Jan. 8, when 2,678 people were hospitalized with the coronavirus. More than a third (33.6%) of Indiana’s intensive care unit beds are occupied by COVID patients.

The 50 new deaths due to COVID-19 lifted the cumulative total to 14,308 during the pandemic. The seven-day moving average of new deaths rose from 18 to 19 per day, the health department said.

The state released the latest statistics for so-called breakthrough cases, hospitalizations and deaths on Thursday, reflecting data through Sept. 2. The numbers, which are updated weekly, showed that 22,666 Hoosiers who had been fully vaccinated against COVID-19 have since tested positive for the virus, while 523 required hospitalization and 144 died. The average age of a breakthrough death was 79 years old.

More than 3.14 million Hoosiers had been fully vaccinated against COVID-19 as of Thursday at 5 a.m. after a daily increase of 6,714.
