Henderson, the department’s commissioner since mid-2006, will move to the state’s Family and Social Services Administration to become director for compliance.
The appointments were announced this afternoon.
Everson, 54, has a long resume in government and business leadership, but he was fired as president and CEO of the American Red Cross in November 2007 after only six months on the job. The Red Cross cited a “personal relationship with a subordinate employee” for his dismissal. The case made national headlines.
Everson spent four years as commissioner of the Internal Revenue Service and was deputy director for management in the Office of Management and Budget during Daniels’ tenure as OMB chief.
He was also a senior executive with one of France’s largest companies, Pechiney Group (American National Can), for 10 years. He was vice president of the company’s glass container division in Marion from 1993 to 1995.
Everson is also former deputy commissioner of the Immigration and Naturalization Service.
Most recently, he has been senior adviser for Cleveland-based Dynamis Advisors Inc., working to develop health care, work force training and other projects in New Orleans.
His first day at the Department of Administration will be Jan. 26.
Daniels spokeswoman Jane Jankowski told the Associated Press that Everson has outstanding professional credentials.
“He made a mistake, and it is one he has paid for professionally and personally,” Jankowski told AP. “The governor doesn’t excuse or condone it, but the governor also believes in second chances. We’re lucky that we can find someone like him to join our administration.”
Henderson will report to new FSSA Secretary Anne Murphy. She will focus on compliance for the agency’s eligibility modernization initiative and other contracts, starting Feb. 2.
“Carrie’s move to FSSA is a perfect match,” Daniels said in a press release. “With her guidance, the state is now spending more dollars with Indiana companies than ever before through our Buy Indiana program, and we’ve leveraged the state’s purchasing power to obtain lower prices for the goods and services we buy.”
