Thank goodness. Glad to see that eyesore of a lot get developed into some much-needed retail along College, not to mention the benefits of affordable housing. Now bring on the traffic calming measures on College.
Timing the lights to the speed limit would calm traffic. They do a pretty good job of this north of 38th. Congestion slows northbound traffic until 11th St. When the lights are timed, the motivation to speed is gone.
Projects like this make me wish they ran the Red Line straight down college instead of turning to Capitol (especially since the Purple Line will also run down Capitol). Having a straight shot to Mass Ave/Transit Center would be awesome and help support all of these new developments on College.
Just wait until corridor on capitol between 14th and 18th blows up with IU Health’s new hospital and associated developments.
It’s just hard for people to afford anything right now especially real estate. Wages don’t keep up with surging prices. It’s the root cause for this whole debate.
The local/federal government spent millions to get FCP where it is today over the last 20 years…
There should remain affordable housing options for those who the original funding was meant to help as well…
The Federal grant was for $4 Million. That went to repave alleys, redo streets, and sidewalks. I think storm sewer improvements were a city/utility partnership.
Dan M — there were also programs for down payment assistance, mortgage rate reductions and property tax abatement for low income buyers. All were ephemeral. As soon as the original income-qualified applicant sold the house, it’s simply market rate. That’s what we have in FCP now, though there is a lasting legacy of varied housing stock. The income-qualified homes were often smaller, so FCP does have the unique character of 1000 sqft homes on the same block as 4000 sqft homes.
FCP badly needs an influx of affordability so it’s fantastic news that the CCC took this case seriously and overturned the extremely odd MDC decision.
I am lucky enough to be traveling again in Europe and yes we need more high density housing in and around downtown.
If you are going to the expense of putting in a garage and retail, may as well build up. If you move into an urban neighborhood that already has multiple older apartment complexes, it’s reasonable to expect more. Just be glad it’s not more factories. Is a 2 story really that much better than 4?
