Marion County Assessor Joe O'Connor told WTHR-TV that most of the errors involve homes that were assessed an average of 20 percent higher than they should have been. That could force homeowners to pay higher property taxes if the errors aren't corrected.
O'Connor said the state-mandated reassessment factored in updated land values, home improvements and replacement costs. But it failed to consider sales prices for neighborhood homes, which can equalize assessments.
O'Connor said his office is working to correct the errors.
New assessments were due to be mailed in early November but could be delayed up to a month.
