    1. Meh not really. The auto manufacture sure but they’re already doing that today. All the newest best EV’s coming out have safety tech and cameras all over the place. They can track eye movement, hands on the wheel, and driving patterns. They will get data on you if you buy a new car one way or the other.

    2. No. Driving is a privilege, not a right, and it’s done so on publicly-funded and publicly-owned infrastructure.

  1. I guess I’m hypocritical because as much as I excoriate the rapid loss of our freedoms their are some things like this that I’m ok with. For example I’d be fine if they banned cigarettes, but I know that’s going a bit too far. Any step that can reduce drunk driving or dangerous driving in general is a good one because we have an enormous history with those problems. It’s certainly very different than the current debate over vaccinated vs unvaccinated. I guess theirs no black or white solution to all problems and each must be looked at separately…..(the capitalized JEFF A.)

  2. Why was it necessary for the additional comment at the end of this quote?

“These aren’t just numbers; these are family, friends, coworkers, neighbors and fellow Americans—and tragically and disproportionately, Black, brown and Native American,” said Deputy Transportation Secretary Polly Trottenberg.

Isn’t it enough to say the loss of any loved one is tragic?

    1. Agree. It would be one thing if all these safety standards were only given to white people and not to everyone. If her point is that the non-white folk get hurt because they can’t afford cars, I’m not sure that the cars will become more affordable due to all these new bells and whistles. Seemed like a non sequitur, or maybe just plain-old pandering to an audience.

  3. Drunken driving is bad enough, but I still say distracted “cell phone” driving is causing more accidents than anything. Completely unscientific, but my own personal observation of daily driving and seeing so many people oblivious to paying attention to the road with their heads down in their phone. I really wish they could address that in some meaningful way.
