The department on Friday said 59.8% of Indiana residents 18 and older are now fully vaccinated.
Fewer than 3.4 million Hoosiers had been fully vaccinated against COVID-19 as of Friday at 5 a.m. after a daily increase of just 1,918. Meanwhile, more than 543,000 Hoosiers have already gotten vaccine boosters.
The slow climb in the vaccination rate coincides with recent increases in COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations.
The health department on Friday reported 71 more COVID-19 deaths in the state, raising the total to 16,518. The seven-day average of deaths rose to 18.
The department reported 2,807 more cases of COVID-19, increasing the pandemic total to 1,049,575. The moving average of daily cases has climbed from about 1,700 to more than 2,200 over the past week.
Statewide hospitalizations due to COVID-19 increased from 1,298 on Wednesday to 1,327 on Thursday. COVID patients occupy 15.1% of Indiana’s intensive care unit beds. Hospitalizations had been on a downward trajectory since mid-September but have been climbing again over the past week.

Given the extremely backward status of the state, despite respected institutions of higher learning, that 6 out of ten are vaccinated is positive.
Certainly certain counties have greater problems. And the lack of concern for becoming ill or spreading infection while sad and regrettable is not shocking.
As people perish a common cavalier partisan attitude persists that Covid is simply a democratic plot to limit individual freedom.
You know what absolutely limits individual freedom? Death. So weigh the temporary restriction of a few freedoms against the eternal loss of all freedoms very carefully.
But what about the long-term data for death? Should we wait until we have long-term data on death?
