Herron High, a charter school that is not affiliated with IUPUI’s Herron School, purchased the building and plans to expand into it someday. The high school is housed next door in the Herron Museum Building, which once was home to the Indianapolis Museum of Art.
That building, at the corner of Pennsylvania and 16th streets, underwent a $3.7 million renovation two years ago.
The tarp, donated by Keep Indianapolis Beautiful, will be installed tomorrow. Herron High is paying the cost of transporting and installing the section of roof.
Principal Janet H. McNeal estimated the cost of a permanent room fix at about $50,000. A complete renovation would run roughly $3 million.
“We recognize that it will be a challenge to raise the funds we need in this economic climate,” she said in a statement. “We are just hoping that enough people in the community recognize the significance of this historic building.”
