Nearly 3,500 Indianapolis-area customers of AES Indiana remained without power Sunday morning, after two weekend weather events knocked out electricity in several spots across the city.

A total of about 37,000 customers have been without power at different times over weekend. Many suffered outages following Saturday’s early-morning thunderstorms. Other outages were reported throughout Saturday due to damage caused by high winds, said Kelly Young, director of public relations for AES Indiana.

As of 11:50 a.m. Sunday, the number of customers without power had been whittled down to 3,437. The utility serves about 500,000 customers in the Indianapolis area. Young said the company and its crews will continue to work 24/7 to restore power to all customers.

The company said in a tweet that it expects restoration to be “substantially complete” by late Monday evening.

The severe weather early Saturday morning was part of a powerful pack of storms that spawned tornado touchdowns in at least five other states. Kentucky, which could see its death toll top 100, was the hardest hit.
