The Indiana State Department of Health on Wednesday reported 1,450 new COVID cases, a drop of 92% from the all-time high of 17,684 reported on Jan. 21. The seven-day moving average of cases has dropped from 14,501 to 1,820 during that time frame.
Still, the surge in cases is resulting in a large number of deaths. The department on Wednesday reported 125 more COVID-19 deaths on top of the 64 reported on Tuesday, for a two-day total of 189. The pandemic death toll climbed to 21,524. The cumulative death count has grown by more than 3,000 since the beginning of the year.
Hospitalizations continue to fall in Indiana. The department said 1,525 people were hospitalized with COVID-19 in Indiana as of Tuesday, down from 1,600 on Monday. Hospitalizations have plummeted 57% since hitting a pandemic high of 3,519 on Jan. 13. COVID patients occupy 17.1% of Indiana’s intensive care unit beds. The state has 18.2% of its ICU beds available overall.
More than 3.67 million Hoosiers had been fully vaccinated against COVID-19 as of Tuesday at 5 a.m. More than 1.69 million Hoosiers have gotten vaccine boosters.
The department said 60.5% of Indiana residents 12 and older and 62.5% of residents 18 and older are fully vaccinated. The vaccination rate for residents 18 and older has risen by 1.6 percentage points in Indiana over the past two months.
