Carmel-based Shepherd Insurance & Financial Services, one of the largest independent insurance agencies in the Indianapolis area, announced Wednesday that it has acquired Chappell Insurance Agency in Fishers.

Terms of the transaction, which took effect Friday, were not disclosed.

Shepherd has 103 employees following the addition of Chappell’s three agents, including father-son team Ray Chappell and Eric Watson. They join three other father-son duos at Shepherd: Dave and Quinn Shepherd, Andy and Drew Denny and Tom and Jeff Johnson.

In 2011, Shepherd wrote $198 million in premiums, making it the 10th-largest independent insurance agency in the metropolitan area, according to IBJ statistics.

Founded in 1977, Shepherd also has locations in Greenfield, Columbus, Seymour and Evansville.
