A decision this week from the Federal Highway Administration allows INDOT to acquire land for the corridor that extends 13 miles from Interstate 465 to State Road 38. Construction is expected to begin in 2011.
The upgrades to the portion of highway will meet freeway standards and not only reduce congestion but improve safety, INDOT Commissioner Karl B. Browning said in a statement. The project will be funded by Major Moves-Gov. Mitch Daniels’ program to upgrade highways by leasing the Indiana Toll Road.
It will include 10 new interchanges along U.S. 31-at I-465, 106th, 116th, 131st, 136th, 146th/151st, 161st and 191st streets, and at state roads 32 and 38.
Beyond Hamilton County, improvements will be made on U.S. 31 in Kokomo and from Plymouth to South Bend.
